Books for You / Summer Book Buddies
Books for You/Summer Book Buddies is the newest project of Children’s Reading Alliance. Providing books for activities supporting the message to Read With a Child Every Day are the focus of this alliance with the community. CRA will provide books, new or gently used, to organizations or programs that use them to promote reading and books in the home. If you have a special event or program for children, ages 0 – 8, and would like them to receive a book, information about reading 20 minutes every day, book lists, or parenting tips on reading with children.

Today, over 2200 of the most educationally vulnerable children in Las Cruces need your support. This summer, they will be attending K3+ at Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS). K3+ is a summer school program. The school district has requested that Children’s Reading Alliance provide 9,000 supplemental books to give these children to take home and keep.
Struggling readers lose between two to four months of their academic gains made during the school year when they do no recreational reading at home during the summer. Children raised in homes with books consistently out-perform those without books.
You can support children and their families by partnering with us to provide appropriate children’s literature to these most vulnerable readers at a critical time in their reading development.
Our goal is to raise $30,000 to put new books in the hands of young readers. Volunteers, many of them former educators, are preparing story-time literacy experiences to share with the children during the summer. Our volunteers will visit classes at eighteen K3+ sites four times each. LCPS has requested that we give a book to each child every time we come. To do that we need to raise approximately $1,500 per school.
